Bully Kutta vs Indian Mastiff

Most people tend to believe that Bully Kutta and Indian Mastiff are one and the same breed. However there is ample evidence that this may not be true. Here are a few facts which distinct Bully Kutta from Indian Mastiff.
The word Bully Kutta literally means Bull Dog. The word Kutta means 'Dog' in Hindi/Punjabi.

Modern Bully Kutta(via Wikipedia)

1] Bully Kutta is a recent creation - a crossbreed of Mastiff, Bull Terrier and Old English Bulldog. Interestingly a similar crossbreed was (now extinct) Cordoba Fighting Dog. The Cordoba Fighting Dog was so dog aggressive that the male and female would rather fight than mate. In addition, many members of this breed died in the dog fighting pits, contributing to the breed's extinction.

Both Bully Kutta and Cordoba Fighting Dog are identical on few counts -
(1)serious dog aggression.
(2) inability to hunt in packs and
(3) White coat color.

The white coat colour in Bully Kutta is because of the presence of Bull Terrier blood in them.

These facts put the Bully Kutta breed in contrast with the Indian Mastiff which were mostly red/fawn-brindle in color and were extensively used in hunting.

2] Historical accounts confirm the presence of large dogs of mostly red/fawn and brindle coat. Bully Kutta on the other hand have mostly white coat with black patches or pure black coats.

The following painting shows Mughal Akbar hunting with dogs. Please note the red and fawn color of the dogs. Also note that none of the dogs have wrinkles around their muzzle like Bully Kuttas.

3] Indian Mastiff were used used for hunting deer and bucks which shows that they were capable of hunting in packs. Bully Kutta are dog aggressive and hence not suitable for pack hunting.

All these facts put together point to the same fact - "The modern Bully Kutta is not the same breed as was the ancient Indian Mastiff as described by Pliny and Aristotle".

Pliny's Natural history also refer to these dogs but mix them up with the Cynocephali. These Cynomones had dogs which originated from the Babylonian dogs. They are described as big, strong dogs; as big as Hyrcanians and ideal for fighting lions.
Aristotle writes many interesting things about the "Indian Dog". He claims that the Indian Dog is a cross between dog and tiger. Only the third generation can be used as the first two are too aggressive. The bitches were tied up in an isolated spot when on heat, many were eaten by the tigers. It is interesting to see that Pliny repeats this story. Nowadays it is naturally impossible for a dog and a tiger to cross; at least not today. Needless the say the Indian Dogs are brindle dogs.

4] Indian Mastiffs are a guard dog breed; Bully Kuttas are not
Pakistanis claim that Bully Kuttas make really good guard dogs. However if we look at the list of white dogs we find that most of them are either Hound or Terrier type. The few which are in fact guard dog breeds are mostly used to guard sheeps and come from mountainous regions. Being white give them an advantage. They can hide among the sheep or use their white coat colour to mix with surrounding snow.

  1. the bully kutta is way much better and admired by all breeders and dog enthusiasts around the world and is similar to dogo argentino which is also a great dog and your claim that they are not good guard dogs is also wrong.Although they are bred for fighting but they still make wonderful guard dogs but are a bit difficult to train and are not for the first timers but they are used for guarding farms , properties and personnel as well such as the chaudarys which are a high class in the villages of pakistan and if you type indian mastiff on google the results are bully kutta of pakistan and there is nothing such as an indian mastiff and what india dose is if it cant make some thing all they do is take it from some where else and rename it as indian shit or what ever so the truth is there is nothing such as an indian mastiff because its just bully kutta taken from pakistan and renamed and if there is even some thing as the indian mastiff why dosent it comes
on google or wikipedia or any other trust able site and no body around the world knows any thing as indian mastiffs so you are just complete lairs and assholes

    4. The Alangu mastiff/ Indian mastiff is a cross bw sindh mastiff and alangu hound. The alangu mastiff/Indian mastiff has bred with various other foreign breeds that it created a new group called Bully kutta. All these bully kuttas have some gene copies of the Alangu mastiff. Some even exist as Alangu Mastiffs but are called as bully kuttas, while others debate that both are one and the same.

  2. Pakistan used to be a part of India, that meant it was originally belongs to India only, the country itself is not even 70 year old which shouldn't talk about heritage.

  3. In my opinion bully kutta isn't an 'ancient' breed but rather a mix of breeds bought over to India by the British.

  9. Like mentioned in wiki the bully kutta originates from Pakistan. You got the sindh mastiff and the northern mastiffs. All mixture of breeds from the west no where near India. Pakistan was never part of India as it got it's name and independence after Pakistan. So you can say India was part of Pakistan. So the breeds of the west are CEO, kangal, Afghan kuchi, bull terriers, English mastiffs and other mastiffs from the west bought by the British. These western breeds were breed with the bloodline of the alaunt. Now all the types of bullies were created and originate from Pakistan. Gull ters, bully gull ter, sindh mastiff, kohati bully, nagi bully, gulldong, modern bully kutta all created and originate from Pakistan. These were breeds were created by dog fighting enthusiasts from Pakistan. Does the gull ter originate from india. I don't think So?? If you think all the breeds of bully types originate from india your mistaken. So if you want to carry on assuming to make you Indians feel better carry on. India does not have all the types of pbk mentioned. Like wiki says imported legally or illegally from Pakistan. Pakistani enthusiasts created these breeds trying to rename as Indian mastiff is wrong. Even if any bullies were taken to India after partition it would be people who moved from Pakistan to India.

  10. The dog is now “extremely popular” in Punjab, India other than Pakistan.[9] In India, it has been imported from Sindh legally or illegally by breeders from several rural areas of Punjab and Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthanhowever it is not recognized by Kennel Club of India. They have been part of many competitions in India.[10][9]According to Times of India, it has importance among youth of having a macho image.[11] from wiki.

  12. Bully Kuttas have been described as intelligent, alert, responsive, energetic and aggressive. A well known veterinary Dr. LN Gupta from Agra, India says that Pakistani bully dogs are a dominating canine and only be handled by well-experienced owners.[4] from wiki. An Indian Dr said Pakistani bully not Indian mastiff. Lol not even recognised in India by the kennel club of India. By creating a blog or face book and renaming the Pakistani bully kutta to Indian mastiff makes me lol lol lol lol lol lol

    1. Yes it's funny how the Facebook of Indian mastiff has pictures of Pakistani gull ters and bullies clearly pictures taken from other sources. Yes now the popularity is increasing in India. But all specimens of bully kutta originate from Pakistan. That's where the true specimens came from and now being imported from Pakistan.
